A Chinese exercise system that has many faces. What might it do for you?
Ok, it looks like a group of people standing on a lawn
waving their hands around, but there is a little more going on
than that.
This is Tai Chi or Tai Chi Chuan to give it it’s full name. It is
an exercise system originating in China that has spread around
the world. It is used every day by young and old alike as a means
of maintaining health, healing injuries and self defence.
Characterised by its slow movements and graceful flow, Tai Chi
has much to offer the modern western world and its hectic life
style. This
ancient system for
finding your Chi (inner energy)
means different things to
different people.
Everyone seems to think
that they know what Tai Chi is,
but it generally turns out that
that we don’t always see what
we expect. So what would you
see if you attend one of my
classes?
Zhuan Zhong (Standing
Post Chi Kung) A form of
standing still meditation that releases and generates Chi (the internal energy of
the body).
Warm up routine to gently stretch and relax the body. Tai Chi has to be
performed in a loose (Sung) manner.
Practice of Yang Style Long Form. Form is the flowing sequence of
movements that most people see as Tai Chi.
Chi Kung exercises. Simple repetitive breath and motion exercises to
circulate the Chi around the body.
Push Hands, San Sau, Da Lu, etc. Two person exercise routines. I don’t teach
these in all classes.
In some classes you’ll see weapons forms. Short stick, Straight Sword (Jian)
and Broadsword (Dao). Don’t panic - You don’t have to learn these unless you
want to! I mostly teach these at weekends.
